What are the best sun creams for babies & children?

Whether you've got a holiday booked or you're planning to enjoy the summer at home, ensuring your kids are safe and protected in the sun is always going to be a priority! Little one's have got sensitive and thinner skin in comparison to us adults, so it really is vital that they are shielded from the suns powerful rays. To reduce your baby’s exposure to sun, dress them in light clothing as well as a good quality sun hat and ensure you purchase a sun cream which blocks both UVA rays (causes aging), and UVB rays (causes burning) - both of which damage the skin. From the age of three you should also look to purchase sunglasses for your child that have an elastic strap (so they stay on) and that carry the European Standard "CE" mark and the British Standard BSEN 1836:1997.

For now, from the affordable to the slightly more expensive, here is our list of recommended sun creams on the market to protect your child.

Child's Farm 50+ SPF Sun Cream - £12.00

Popular child's skincare brand Child's Farm have come up trumps again with their 50+ SPF Sun CreamThis high protection sunscreen is thicker in texture, it's water resistant, and protects young and sensitive skin from both UVA and UVB rays, whilst also keeping the skin moisturised and hydrated. Suitable for babies 6 months and upwards, this great product is both dermatologist and paediatrician approved, making it a good option for sensitive skin, and safe for little one's who may be prone to eczema too. It's also unscented, making it suitable for even the tiniest of travellers! We'd also highly recommend this product if you want to reduce the amount of harsh chemicals that you use on your families skin. Overall we'd give this sun cream a 4 out of 5.

La Roche-Posay Anthelios Dermo-Pediatrics SPF 50+ Smooth Lotion - £15.00

Next up is La Roche-Posay's Anthelios Dermo-Pediatrics SPF 50+ Smooth Lotion - the brand which focuses on sensitive skincare has been awarded 100's of 5 star ratings for this procduct, with parents stating it's "The best sun screen for kids! Spreads easily. It is not greasy and does not leave the skin white. No fragrance either." and that it's a "Great product if your skin is delicate & prone to allergy. We use it on both our children who have eczema & are allergic to all other sun creams. Definitely worth the extra money!"

So what's making parents rave about his sun cream?  Well firstly, it's multi-resistant (water, sand and perspiration) and it provides high broad spectrum sun protection against the harmful effects of both UVA and UVB rays. This non-greasy sun cream also contains thermal spring water giving it a fluid easy-to-apply texture - a life saver when you're on holiday with excitable children! Last, but not least the efficancy of La Roche-Posay's Anthelios Dermo-Kids Smooth Lotion has been proven by a file of 16 clinical studies carried out by world-renowned expert dermatologists. If that doesn't win you over, we don't know what will! Overall, yes, a slightly more expensive product, but great value for money considering - we'd rate it a 5 out of 5.

Sunsense Kids SPF 50+ 125ml lotion - £15.99

The Sunsense Kids SPF 50 sun cream has been manufactured to pharmaceutical standards with young delicate skin in mind; easily absorbed, paediatrician tested and extra water resistant. A light consistency that offers high protection from the sun, especially formulated for the sensitive skin of children over 6 months old. This sun cream also contains Vitamin B3, which is an additional ingredient that helps to protect against sun damage. Promoting up to 4 hours of water resistantance, we like this product for it's practicality, plus the very light milky formula isn’t greasy so skin seems to absorb the product fairly quickly. A good product, but if we had to be extra critcial it doesn't seem to have the edge on some of it's competitors - it's a 3.5 out of 5 from us.

Nivea SUN Kids Protect & Care Coloured Lotion Spray SPF 30 - £5.00

Especially formulated for children's delicate skin, this light moisturising spray works to immediately protect against sun exposure and helps to reduce the risk of sun allergies. This sunscreen offers instant UVA/UVB protection and has an extra water resistant formula which is ideal for taking to the beach or to the swimming pool on a hot summer’s day. The Nivea SUN Kids Protect & Care Coloured Lotion Spray is also coloured to ensure even coverage and to make sure you don´t miss any spots! Whilst this sunscreen offers lower SPF protection than some of the other brands, it offers a high UVA star rating of 4*+. Overall we'd give this sun cream a 4 out of 5.

AVEENO® Baby Sunscreen Lotion with Zinc Oxide, SPF 50 - £24.99 (2 Pack)

With over 200 4* reviews, and a rating on EWG as a safer ingredient sunscreen option, it's easy to understand why this sun cream is such a hit among mums and dads. As mild as water, this tear-free mineral sunscreen provides broad spectrum SPF 50 sun protection. The thick skin-soothing formula with oat ingredients helps to lock in moisture and nourishes your little one’s skin, while naturally sourced zinc oxide provides strong sun protection as they enjoy the day. The only thing to mention with the AVEENO® Baby Sunscreen Lotion  is that due to the thicker consistency it can leave a white film on the skin unless it's completely rubbed in. It's a 3.5 out of 5 from us.
